“Hope. Want. And something darker. Loneliness, maybe.”
“What about you?” Ivan asked. “What do you smell like?”
“I don’t know. Wolves can’t smell themselves clearly.”
“Then let me tell you.” Ivan stood, moving slowly, carefully, like he was approaching a wild animal. Which, I supposed, he was. He stopped in front of my chair, close enough to touch but not touching. “You smell like pine and leather. Something wild underneath. And right now…” He leaned down, his face inches from mine. “Right now you smell like you’re barely holding on.”
