Imperfect Replacement
If that were all, maybe I wouldn't have gone so crazy trying to find someone to replace him.
What really killed me was this: an hour before he died, we'd had a fight. It was a stupid argument about where to go on vacation after our finals. That was it. A tiny, meaningless fight—and it became the biggest regret of my life.
I'd stormed off and gone home, sulking. Sam looked for me everywhere, couldn't find me, and then ran into that child in the river. Right up until the moment he jumped in, he kept calling me.
I never picked up. I was being stubborn—waiting for him to call just one more time. One more call, and I would've answered. But I never got that call.
