Before she could explain, the two girls with her scurried out of the room. Emma closed her toolbox slowly, then leaned closer, brushing a strand of hair off my pale face. Her lips pressed in a thin line before she whispered, kissing my hand softly, “You cannot die now, Scarlet Underwood. You are the eye of the gods, and we need you.” My breath hitched—or it would have, if I still had one. Eye of the gods? What did she mean? I wasn’t a goddess.
