Feeling the last of my energy drain from me, I laid my head on the headrest and watched as endless cars seemed to mark each passing miles towards the first stop on this crazy, hopefully successful, journey. End of Book 1

The road was open. The story continued not toward an ending, but toward everything that comes next.

Whatever happens said quietly in the dark and never finished. The ring I'd called ugly. I stood in the middle of an empty road and thought about all of it and then I made a decision. I was going to stop waiting for the end of that sentence. He made his choice. The sentence ended the way it ended and I needed to let it end because standing in the middle of a road between fields waiting for the rest of it wasn't living. It was just a different kind of hiding. I started walking back. On the way through the town I passed a small shop and stopped at the window. A rack of paperbacks inside. Cheap ones. The kind that didn't ask anything of you.

I look past the fast warrior war-wagons and select the oldest, most low-profile iron car in the rows, starting the engine and tearing out into the night. My inner circle is hiding deep within a forgotten thicket at the edge of the territory. The moment my car screeches to a halt beneath the pines, I leap over the doors and run through the brush. I find Nyra kneeling in the dirt, her hands covered in bright red blood as she tries to bind a massive claw wound across Terry’s neck. "What beast did this to him?" I roar, dropping to my knees on the wet mud beside them. "Why did our plans fall into this bloody ruin?"

"They always arrive before the ending." The notebook on the desk suddenly burst open. Words raced across every page. Not one story. Thousands. Millions. Each page showed a different ending. In one... Adrian sacrificed himself. In another... the White Tree burned forever. In another... the Final Reader destroyed every world. Then... the pages stopped. Only one remained blank. The Pen of Endings began shaking inside Adrian's hand. It refused to point toward the notebook. Instead... it pointed toward the boy. Adrian stared at him.

The last page had only two lines. "June 25th. This is the 100th time Dexter has ditched me to go help my best friend in the lab." "What a coincidence. The diary's full. Exactly 100 pages."
