The moment they stepped past the twisted branches, everything changed. The warmth of the sun vanished completely. The sweet smell of flowers was gone, replaced by the clean, sharp scent of rock and damp earth. The only light came from the stone in Elara’s hand soft, steady, but leaving most of the space around them in deep shadow.
At first, it wasn’t too bad. The path was narrow but clear enough. But after a few minutes, the walls seemed to close in just a little, and the whispers started again not loud, but close, like voices just behind your ear.
