"It was eaten." He pointed. On the wall, barely visible in the dim light, were shadows. But they weren't ordinary shadows. They had depth, texture, detail. They were the silhouettes of human beings, burned into the metal surface as if by a nuclear flash. And they were moving. The shadows rippled and shifted, pressing against the wall like prisoners trying to escape through a window. Mouths opened in silent screams. Hands reached toward us with desperate, grasping fingers.

They emerged into a small alleyway, the sound of the growling growing louder. And then, they saw it. A massive, dark shape, lurking in the shadows. Its eyes glowed in the darkness, and its teeth gleamed in the dim light.

That night, after a round of schmoozing, I was walking past the karaoke bar's back alley when I saw a bunch of lowlifes cornering Sarah against a wall. They were hurling abuse and trying to rip her clothes off. I could not just watch. I stepped in and took those goons down. Sarah was a wreck, her eyes wide with fear and shock. That scene haunted my dreams for days, leaving me feeling choked up inside.

Panic seized my chest, and I instinctively took a step backward. CREAK. The ancient wooden floorboard beneath my bare foot gave off a sharp, loud groan. Horror crashed over me. I turned on my heel, scrambling to run back toward my room in the pitch-black darkness of the hallway. Before I could take even three steps, a cold, powerful hand shot out of the shadows, grabbing my wrist with a grip like an iron shackle and slamming me back against the hallway wall. I opened my mouth to scream, but a gloved hand instantly clamped down over my lower face, smothering the sound completely.
