Not the sweet, post-rain hush where everything smells like earth and renewal. No, this silence is sharp. Like a knife held just out of view. And that morning, it followed me.

This is bad, I sigh inwardly as I feel myself tighten. “Did we die?” She returns to her seat, her eyes still closed and I chuckle. “You’re not getting away from me that easy missy.” I say, smiling as I ruffle her hair and the silence returns. From the first time we met, silence seems to be her comfort. Maybe getting involved was the best decision I’ve made in my life after all. Smiling to myself I take her hand again and we drive in the warmth of the stillness that envelopes us, before we reach our destination.

*Erico's POV* People always think I’m the quiet one because I prefer silence. They’re wrong. Silence isn’t a preference. It’s an instinct. A shield. A survival mechanism that’s kept me alive longer than I deserve. But around her… Silence becomes a battlefield.

"The Silence isn't the disease." The entire chamber went still. Neria's eyes closed, as if hearing the voice again still hurt. In the memory, younger Neria frowned. "What?" Seraphine looked toward the horizon. "The Silence is a symptom." The words sent a chill through me because suddenly everything we had learned started fitting together.
