When she sang, she couldn't pretend. The song was one she'd written on a napkin during her break at the diner last Tuesday. Melody first, words after. About her mother. About how the apartment smelled like her lotion for three months after she died, and how Elena used to press her face into the couch cushions just to breathe her in.
