Beside it sat a cast iron kettle on the stove, whistling softly as steam poured from the spout. "And do not break the china," Carmina added, her voice dropping to a threat. "It is worth considerably more than your life." She walked away without checking if I understood, her heels clicking across the tile. I stood there staring at the kettle, my body swaying slightly.
