CAROLINE Maverick Thompson and I have been best friends since the day he kicked his soccer ball right into my face in third grade. I remember everything about that day. The way the ball hit me so hard my glasses flew off and shattered on the concrete. The blood pouring from my nose and how Maverick cried harder than I did, even though I was the one bleeding. The bird let out a sharp, pained cry as it crashed into the wall. Arah flinched, feeling the pain like it was her own. In retaliation, her split-wind tattoo fused into a single form and coiled tightly around Thug Number Three’s neck, squeezing hard. At the same time, Male Owl screeched—a piercing, furious sound—and relaunched itself, raking its talons deep across Thug Number Three’s face. He coughed, cried out, and staggered back, blood streaming from the gashes.

On our wedding night, my wife, who almost never drank, got wasted because she was supposedly too happy. Just when I didn't know what to do, my best friend sent me a long message explaining how to take care of her. I blushed, but I still followed his instructions and soothed her the way he described. He pushed the door open, and everyone saw Fourth stepping on the little girl's back with a wooden stick in his hand. He was about to smash it down. “Stop it!” Before Slim Three could react, Joe yelled. Fourth immediately stopped his movements. When he looked back and saw Joe, a flash of annoyance appeared in the corner of his eyes, but he stopped his movements regardless.

They surrounded me like wolves with a scent—taunting, circling, grinning like they already won. Damien was the first to speak, dragging a finger down the side of my face with a smirk that made my skin crawl. "You know the rules, Elara. Three strikes and they lobotomize you.
