“You dare speak of balance as if it is yours to command? You are ruin, Malachai. You always were.”
“Then perhaps ruin is necessary,” I said, stepping forward, “to rebuild what the gods broke first.”
“You’ve grown arrogant again.”
“No,” I said. “I’ve grown free.”
She drew back, eyes narrowing. “Then you know what comes next.”
“I do.”
The air thickened, the realm crying out in warning. Above us, the sky split open once more, this time not in gold or red, but in black.
Through it, I felt something ancient and older than the gods themselves stirring. A shadow deeper than my own, one that served neither light nor dark.
