He began the story. His voice was low and steady, perfectly pitched for drawing little listeners (and tired grown-ups) into sleep. It was an old story—one his own mother had told him, he had once mentioned in passing, in a moment of vulnerability that felt like a lifetime ago—about a little fox who got lost in the woods and found her way home by following the stars.

The horse told of a bird of fire that would bring them great riches with a single feather, and that could easily be found if they followed towards the setting sun for three days. The three brothers share the food and water they have in the house and start searching immediately. The middle one rides the horse and the smaller one his dog. The eldest goes into town with his pockets full of money and buys the fastest horse in the state, so he soon makes up for lost time and catches up with the brothers.

Because it knew that even if it distracted the wolf by making some noise, his efforts would still be in vain as its mother would still be eaten alive…” “After that, the little rabbit still lived happily with the wolf in rabbit’s skin, calling the wolf ‘Mommy! Mommy!’. Until one day, the little rabbit grew up into a tiger and ate the wolf alive, exacting revenge for its mother.”

“Do you want to hear one of the one’s she tells, or something new?” Lila thinks for a moment, finally squeaking, “new!” “Alright.” I smile softly, searching for the right words to begin. “Once upon a time, there was a brave little wolf who was taken prisoner by an evil sorcerer. He was very mean to her, and very bad.” I explain dramatically. “He kept her locked away in a cage with no light and no people to talk to. He gave her potions to make her weak, and told her terrible things so she would not have the heart to fight him.”
