Smiled. “Instead,” he said, stepping back, “I’ve asked someone else to be my bride.” My knees nearly gave way but I stood still, every cell in my body screaming. Out of the crowd, she stepped forward. Clarissa. My sister. Wearing my dress. "Liam," I breathed. "What are you doing?" He didn’t answer me. He extended his hand, to her. “Clarissa, love, come here.” And just like a rehearsed pageantry, she strode down the red carpet, a smile carved on her lips as she walked towards him, confident, calm and cruel.

She'd grown up watching him become more handsome and more brilliant, and she'd quietly imagined their wedding. She had always behaved properly and played the part of the perfect fiancee. Now, she couldn't help but ask herself why Jack fell in love with someone else instead. It felt like her husband had been taken before she even had the chance to claim him. Even when she'd told Jessie generously before that Jack could still come back to her after they got married, she realized she didn't mean it at all. She wasn't that generous. The boat carrying Jessie and Jack drifted farther away. Marie finally snapped out of her daze. Her brows furrowed in thought.

Are you injured?” “Nay, husband.” She peeked out at him from the edge of the counterpane, “I used a trick my mother told me before she died.” “What trick is that?” “She told me that English men like a woman to bleed on the wedding night, but many lasses don’t, even if they have not been with a man. She told me that lasses put a leach in their channel for a bit a day or two before the wedding to make a weak spot so coupling will shed some blood. I had thought that all the emissary would need was a bloody sheet and mother's trick would provide that for us.”
