Smoke hung close to the ground, unwilling to rise far. It smelled of damp wood and boiled grain. Of life being maintained rather than lived. Elizabeth paused at the edge of it. A woman passed her carrying a bucket and did not look twice. A man nodded politely and continued on. A child ran past, laughing, nearly colliding with her before darting away again. No one flinched. She felt strangely transparent. The village was small. Poor. Houses leaned inward as though sharing secrets. Doors were patched with mismatched boards. Windows were cloudy with age. Everywhere she looked, there were signs of endurance rather than prosperity.

"Mom gave me a pouch of spices yesterday and told me to let it burn as I slept." Rebecca's expression shifted at this, then she broke into a wide grin. "Everly, those spices are the good stuff. You must do as Mom says, okay?" I felt the hair on my arms rise at the sight of her odd, cryptic grin. There were plenty of rabbit-women in our settlement, but not many of them could grow bloodstones. I was holding one of the books that Marlon had given me during my time at the manor; this was the third time I read this book. I still couldn’t put it down.
