One of the hunters moved closer to her tree. His boots crunched the leaves, his torch lighting up her hiding place. Seraphina pressed a hand over her mouth, trying not to breathe too loud.

She threw up a shield of shimmering light, but he tore through it like paper. I heard her scream as his claws raked across her side, saw blood spray black against the snow. "No!" My warriors stood frozen, confused, caught between orders and instinct.

"The King will kill you for this. Both of you." "The King can try," I said, finally moving from my position against the wall. I grabbed Hunter by the throat, lifting him off the ground with one hand. "But first, you're going to tell me everything about this witch who enhanced you. Where is she? Who is she working for?" Hunter's eyes were wide with pain and disbelief. "You think I'll betray her? She'll do worse to me than you ever could." "I doubt that," I said pleasantly, letting my claws extend into his throat just enough to draw blood. "But we can test the theory if you'd like."
