He saw her, a woman who had a new purpose, a new meaning, a new reason to live. He saw her, a woman who had been a prisoner, a woman who was now a sovereign.

She said it flatly, the way Kael had described the drainage system, information delivered without decoration because decoration would have made it about her rather than about what happened. "Mine, and one other. We knew each other. Fought beside each other more than once before that night." "What happened to them," I asked. "Killed. All of them. That night." Something moved behind her eyes, brief, gone before I could hold onto what it was. "I told your Mara I was the only one who survived it standing. That's true, as far as I ever learned. You didn’t cause the deaths of the two, but you did ensure the life of all the others who survived.” It didn’t look like his claim landed. She just shook her head again, almost imperceptibly, and whispered, so soft he could barely hear, “who?” Cole hung his head for a moment, knowing how the first one would hit her before looking back at her, frankly, knowing there was strength beneath all her softness.

Her chest rose and fell with shallow breaths. Still alive. I stood over her, looking down at the woman who'd once been my wife. The woman I'd loved, used, and destroyed. The woman who'd somehow clawed her way back from death to haunt me. "You should have stayed gone," I said quietly. Her eyes fluttered but didn't open. A soft moan escaped her lips. I knelt beside her, studying her face. Even unconscious, even bloodied and broken, there was something defiant about her. Something that refused to surrender.

At first I wasn't sure when I approached Charles, asking him if the woman he met was iris, but I guess my instinct was right. “What are we going to do now?” I could feel my heart breathing again but on a fast race, which could explode any moment from now. “Iris should have remained dead a long time ago,” I said with my eyes flaring in anger. “How? How did she manage to survive?” This whole thing isn't matching. The more I think about it, the more I get headaches. Perhaps she was given a second chance? Did the moon goddess give her a second chance to live because she deserves it? Hence, how did she survive? How's she breathing the same air I'm breathing?

Something in her expression shifted, something that was not quite hesitant but was adjacent to it. "There is something else," she said. "I debated whether to say this. But you should know." She looked directly at the camera. "I am not the only one who survived him. There is another woman. Someone who has been considerably closer to you than I ever was." She paused. "Someone closer to you than you know."

Just a woman who survived. And chose herself.

After all these years, I believed she would be dead. The office was immersed in a dark shadow when the beta entered, a serious look on his face. Ordering the woman to enter, I watched as she crossed the threshold, her eyes filled with fear. "How did you survive?" I asked, my voice filled with authority. The woman hesitated for a moment before answering, her voice trembling. "I was outside the pack that day. I came back to find everything in flames. I managed to escape, but everyone else... everyone was doomed."

She had her hands raised in the air and her eyes closed. "I don't care if you saw anything. I'm not going to kill you. After all, someone's going to have to report to Mondorra about what happened here, right? Just remember to tell him this though: If he dares so much as touch a single hair on the two girls, I'll wipe every last one of his men out!" Wilbur turned to leave after that, leaving the scene of the bloodbath. The woman, who was the only remaining survivor in the entire bar, retched and threw up violently right after.
