When they reached a small fountain surrounded by stone benches, Sebastian suggested they rest. Amelia settled gracefully on one bench, while Isabelle remained standing, ostensibly to examine a nearby rosebush.
“Miss Ellwood,” Sebastian called, “will you not join us?”
Reluctantly, Isabelle turned and approached the fountain. As she did, her foot caught on an uneven stone—naturally, because the ground itself conspired against her dignity. She stumbled forward with an undignified yelp, arms pinwheeling as she fought to regain her balance.
