Their lips met in a passionate kiss, mirroring the one Edwin and I had shared at the masquerade. Gasping, I reached up to touch my face, only to feel the smooth surface of a mask. As I tried to remove it, I found another underneath, and another after that. Each new mask was a different animal—a pig, a rat, a chicken—all creatures considered lowly or undesirable. Then, suddenly, I was surrounded by a crowd of masquerade attendees, all wearing identical silver wolf masks. They pressed in close, their gowns rustling and hands reaching for me.

I made sure that would not happen. I found Marcus early in the evening and cornered him in a dark hallway. I offered a simple trade. His distinctive silver wolf mask for my plain black one. He laughed thinking it was just party fun and swapped without asking questions. With his mask now covering my face I looked enough like him in the dim lighting. Same height. Same build. The mask hid everything else.

He sighed and brushed his hand in his hair the other hand resting in his pocket and he stopped smiling and said in a deep voice, “Seeing you now is risking my life, you know my first name and for the first time I am not afraid to take such a step.” He turned to me and this time he looked straight in my eyes and he continues, “I will try and come back here to see you. But if I can’t and you can recognize me without my mask when we meet once again, then I won’t hesitate to be yours forever. This I promise.”

His mask was bronze and fashioned after a wolf’s features, concealing all but the lower half of his face— along with most of what looked like a wicked, slashing scar from his brow down to his jaw. It didn’t hide the eye that was missing—or the carved golden orb that had replaced it and moved as though he could use it. It fixed on me. Even from across the room, I could see his remaining russet eye widen. He sniffed once, his lips curling a bit to reveal straight white teeth, and then he turned to the other faerie. “You’re joking,” he said quietly. “That scrawny thing brought down Andras with a single cold iron arrow?”

He’d saved me, turning into a monstrous, beautiful wolf to rip the man apart. I was grateful and relieved he saved me, but the sudden lust that filled me followed by the anger that I couldn’t escape him even in my dreams, made me confused. All I had been able to do was stare. His wolf wasn’t a typical wolf. It reminded me of a blue merle Australian Shepherd, but it was definitely a wolf. Its face mask was black, with stripes down his muzzle and cheek bones, while alternating patches of black, white, and grey littered the rest of its body. The only brown was a light brown and it was on his paws and heels like socks. Even covered in blood, his wolf’s beauty was entrancing.

Everyone was deep in thought trying to figure out how they were able to pull it off and the gears in my own head were turning. According to my own research I had done when trying to formulate a scent mask, the best way to mask a wolf’s scent is by using the blood of an alpha mixed with wolfsbane injected into the bloodstream. This knowledge was not much of a secret since I myself had come across it in a history book that I had found in the Alpha library.

Their leader is a black wolf with blue eyes, and he wants to stand on the high cliff and declare war on his opponent. The Red Wolve did not dare to stop but only dared to lean to the side. Wolves usually have gray and yellow fur, but with wolves having white, black, and red fur is very special. The black wolf that received the order to distract Windy was just a wolf with yellow fur because to distract the opponent, he disguised himself to look like Ezra.

I would save that crown first. “Now, accept your identities,” Alpha Hugo ordered, gesturing toward the Academy wolves. Each wolf stepped forward and stopped before one of us. In perfect unison, they removed the velvet cloths revealing the identities that were actually a mask. Masks carved in the shapes of different animals. “Wow, I got a lion!” one Alpha exclaimed proudly. “I got an elephant!” another shouted. “I got a bear!” The hall filled with their voices, excitement, curiosity, tension, all merging together.

It was a plain, half-face mask made of dark leather, something that wouldn’t stand out too much since many unmated wolves wore masks at these events to add mystery to the night. “You blend in, you observe, and you leave before anyone gets too curious,” Kane reminded me. “No shifting, no giving orders, and for the love of the moon, try not to radiate ‘Alpha’ energy all over the place.” Raze growled in discontent as my beta uttered those words out,it sound commanding to my wolf. Wolf nodded heavily, "Boss, I know, I'll speed up for sure, I won't hold up your big plans. Member Ms. Lamb has already been tamed, she's full of killing intent now, and the second sacrifice is almost ready." "Very good, but..." That guy was also wearing a mask, but it wasn't an animal, it was a Thor mask. He turned around, eyes fixed on him: "Wolf, sometimes you can play smart, but don't overdo it, or you won't even know how you died in the end." When Wolf heard that, he got chills all over. The adult's words were intimidating without even trying, and his body started shaking on its own. "Are you scared?"
