The words hit him harder than shouting would have.
Owen stood up too quickly, the movement sharp, panicked. “So that’s it?” he asked. “You’re just walking away?”
She turned then, meeting his eyes. “I’m choosing myself,” she replied. “Something I should’ve done years ago.”
The finality in her voice sent fear skittering through his chest. He took a step closer, then another, like proximity alone might fix what distance had broken.
“But I love you,” he said. The words came out raw, almost desperate.
