Varic's pov It was a few hours till the conference would begin and I had decided to take a stroll down the woods behind the courthouse. Sunlight filtered lazily through the trees as I walked beside Aiden. The forest was calm and only the sounds of insects, birds flying through trees and animals running around. It was a kind of calmness that was away from all the bustling in the courthouse. Walking in the woods had become one of my hobbies to let of a lot of steam. I waste no time before jogging across the backyard off into the treeline. The first place I go is to the lake. For a while, I sit down on the water’s edge, skipping stones across the surface. It probably isn’t a good idea to stay so close to the packhouse if I don’t want to get caught and I make the decision to follow a little walking trail I found that leads off away from the lake and further into the trees. It’s warm and moist out, and I hear the sounds of various woodland creatures and insects chirping and calling around me. I breathe in the fresh air and continue on my way, having no clue where I’m going. As long as I stay on the trail, I’ll be able to find my way back to the packhouse.

It jolted back, hopped into the air and flew away through the darkness. I felt the thrill of coming so close to a wild thing. Maybe that was why I sought the woods, for the rushes only it could provide. I’d seen strange things here, things all the science and reasoning in the world couldn’t explain away. Tunes fluted in the dead of night, whispered voices that followed me down the winding paths. Ghostly eyes stared out from the darkness and strange silhouettes sliced through the moonlit sky. There were fires that eternally receded, phantom cries like sound trapped in a vortex of time, and strange scents that tainted the wind. Tonight was peaceful. The woods slept. I shed my worries like
