We sat in silence for a while, the good kind this time. Then she asked, lightly, “How’s your friend?”
Cade’s face flashed in my mind, his words, his betrayal. “He’s fine,” I answered, leaving it at that.
But then the question slipped out of me, unplanned. “Mom, did you ever have your heart broken?”
She went quiet, her gaze going distant. Then a bitter little laugh escaped. “Yes. And that heartbreak is what ruined me.”
