As he pulled the middle drawer too hard, a small, pink spiral notebook slipped out from the back, tumbling onto the floorboards. It was mine. On the cover was a crooked, faded sticker of a cartoon rabbit. Dad’s hand froze mid-air. Mom’s vacant gaze slowly drifted over to it. Dad reached down and flipped open the first page. Written in large, shaky pencil strokes was a single rule: When Leo can't breathe, do not panic. Beneath the words was a crude pencil drawing I had sketched. It showed a small hand placed gently against a baby's back, sliding from top to bottom in a soft, soothing motion.

This time, I’ll take the gentle Arnold, and Elysia shall suffer instead. Her thoughts continued to pour into my mind, sending a chill down my spine. So she had been reborn as well, and somehow, I had gained the ability to hear other people’s thoughts. I had no way of letting it free and so it festered until there was no way out. The world moved slowly around me and though it became increasingly more difficult to breathe and my eyes watered uncontrollably, it wasn't until Deshawn appeared that I even noticed the way my brain screamed at me to move. He appeared in front of me, half of his body in the flames while his arms reached out and grabbed onto my shoulders. His mouth moved but it took a few moments before his voice slipped past the defenses in my head and resonated within me. "Reniella!" he screamed as desperation poured out with every word. I was not letting my daughter take a scratch. I slammed my palm down on the table and stood up.
