Kenny’s head tilts slightly, like the land just said his name and he’s deciding whether to answer. “I’m not running,” he says, calm in a way that twists something deep in my chest. “I’m standing.” Kael exhales beside me, slow and controlled, the way he does before violence. “The land is responding.” “I know,” I say. My jaw aches. “I feel it in my teeth.” The clearing isn’t shaking, that would be easier. Fear understands shaking but this is worse and deliberate. The ground hums low, like a held note, like the moment before a choice locks into place.
