His movements were still precise, still controlled, but even he was adjusting now, shifting more frequently, compensating for changes that weren’t there earlier.
“They’re escalating,” he said as he stepped back into the edge of our formation, his gaze flicking briefly toward me. “And this is still controlled.”
I felt my stomach tighten at that. “You think this gets worse?”
Elijah didn’t hesitate. “I know it does.” I knew he was going to say that. His answer was inevitable. But it still hurt to hear him say it.
“They haven’t committed everything yet,” he continued. “What you’re seeing right now is them testing how far they can push before they have to.”
