The glass of the clock-face shattered on impact. The noise in the Vault resounded again, closer this time, a boom of thunder that brought with it a hurricane of high-pitched shrieking that was so loud it made me clap my hands over my ears. The Erelim was standing now too and his whole body was trembling as he lifted his head, his face pointed towards the ceiling. The eyes were all staring wildly, and I watched in horror as each eyeball flipped back to reveal a blank milky-whiteness. His mouth dropped open, stretching impossibly, and he let out a howl of unfathomable anguish and fury.

I didn’t know what that meant- I certainly hadn’t seen that before. The first one had a scar by his eyes, and the second one didn’t have an ear. I think he didn’t have his left ear. It was hard to know what side he was on and I didn’t think I had the strength to find what ear it really was. He kept moving around like his legs would ache if he stood in a spot. “Will you shut up!” The scarred man asked as he walked closer to me. “Let me out of here.” I yelled again ignoring how much closer the earless man was.

His lips move carefully—probably my name, or a question, or just hello. I can’t hear it. I reach into the satchel without looking away from him. Pull out a scrap of parchment—one of the pages I tore from an old ledger in the ruins—and the quill and small ink vial Elias gave me yesterday. My fingers are steady now. Too steady. I write in small, precise letters: *I cannot hear you. My ears were broken in the attack. I can read your lips if you speak slowly. Or write. What do you want?*

It looked like a cataract on the eye of the world. "It’s not over, Rowan," I whispered, my voice returning to its natural, scratchy warmth. I pulled my sleeve back. The "X" on my wrist was gone, replaced by a jagged, red scar where I had driven the stylus into the barrier. "I broke the office. I broke the man in the white suit. But the system... it’s trying to recover."

I didn't dare move too much, as it might disturb him. But after skimming the first page, I couldn't help but turn my head. Thierry Bradley was so handsome. And hasn't he aged? Why did he look the same as he did four years ago? I noticed something behind his ear, and my curiosity made me move closer to him. It was a small tattoo, just behind his ear, a little closer to the pulse point on his neck. I wanted to see what it was, so I cautiously approached, and suddenly I realized.

CRACK— As the original Celine Diamond's neck broke, the glass in the room shattered into pieces. Cecilia stared blankly at Celine Diamond's soul which seemed to be fading away into tiny bits of glittering glass dust in the wind. Cecilia's third eye became even shinier than before as if absorbing new energy into itself. And as soon as Celine Diamond's soul was annihilated, Cecilia pulled her hand out of the shattered mirror, making a long wound along her arm.

It wasn't made up but painted. Painted porcelain. Tina gasped. There was a small hole below Tenniel's left eye, exposing a series of rubber bands that constricted and slacked as his eye turned in its socket. Suddenly, Tina's fear freed her from whatever enchantment she had fallen under, and she whirled away and bolted to the door of the small room. For one second, she thought she would make it, that she would finally be free of this nightmare. She thought she could run and run until the world made sense again.

Zheira pointed to the mirror, and whispered timidly, “It broke.” Celestine nodded while examining her cheeks, making sure not to look at her eyes nor at her horns. “Hold your breath.” One by one, she started removing the glasses. Two small pieces were piercing her right cheeks and three on the left. Every time she managed to get a piece, Zheira would wince and she had to blow some air on it to stop it from aching.

They were bundazzled as they saw me come out of the restroom. "If you're going to spend your working time to gossip about me, at least get the facts straight." I commented on their topic about me. I could see their trembling and shaky body. I respected myself and just left their with a smile. I didn't know it was this bad. It was definitely not going to be easy but I'll get through it. Tina hit Jessie's hand as if it was her fault and felt they were going to be in trouble for getting on my bad side and gossiping about me.

Jalon smiled at him, saying, "well let's just hope that we don't meet again because next time I wouldn't be so kind to warn you of my strategy before you engaging it,”
