Dante stood and listened to his footsteps until they faded and the alley was quiet again. He looked down at his hand. His knuckles were swelling already, the skin split along two of them where they'd connected with Jayce's jaw. He flexed his fingers carefully and decided that broken was probably too strong a word. Badly bruised. Possibly a hairline fracture in the knuckle of his middle finger. He'd had worse. He picked up his basket from where it had fallen and checked the damage. I screamed out as a tremendous amount of pain shot through my hand. "FUCK!" I squealed as I watched blood seep out of my finger.

The remnants of the vines holding his hand were burned to ashes. Then he stepped forward, closing the space between us. He reached for my hand, gently prying it open. His fingers brushed mine as he inspected the tiny cut, and the contact sent a strange shiver up my arm. He pulled a handkerchief from his pocket and wrapped it neatly around my finger, his touch surprisingly tender despite the tension in his gaze. “You bleed too easily,” he murmured, almost to himself. I looked up at him, my chest aching with questions I couldn’t ask. And then, just as quickly as he’d closed the distance, he stepped back. The walls slammed back into place, his mask firm once more.

Fuck it hurts to breathe. "I'm fine, just a few broken ribs this time. You know I can't fight back. The punishment will be worse than the beating so I'll take the latter. Can we just head to my house?" My voice is just barely above a whisper. I feel a hand grab my arm and I panic thinking it's Maximus so I rip my arm away which wasn't the best decision. The second I pulled my arm away a fourth broken rib makes itself known.
