She took a massive, panicked gulp. He seemed to be peering straight into her soul. His intense gaze pierced through her body like a drill, making her violently tremble. "I'm sorry, Master. I didn't see you," she hurriedly apologized, desperate to get out of there. He didn't respond. He simply stood blocking her path, never taking his piercing eyes off her. She nervously cleared her throat to get his attention, but it didn't work. After a few agonizing seconds of standing there in heavy silence, he finally decided to speak.

The people here turned to bitter herbs gathered under moonlight, faded talismans, or desperate prayers offered to indifferent gods. Indeed still, I might swear I see something else on his wolfish confront, something disappointed and maybe indeed pitiful. “I’m too bad, Nyx,” he says, his voice difficult with conviction.

A thick vein throbbed on his forehead. Fuck, Tobias was pissed. “Don’t fucking patronize me, Alpha,” he drawled hoarsely. “You know what I’m talking about. How else do you explain her white brows and eyelashes?!” He yelled like a maniac.

I blink. "You’ve never seen someone cry from happiness?" He narrows his eyes. "You think people cry for fun?" I open my mouth. Close it. Decide it’s not worth explaining. "You know what? Never mind," I sigh. Tobias runs a hand down his face, looking five years old. "I thought I was about to witness an actual crisis," he mutters. "I am so not paid enough for this." Then, under his breath— "Fucking pregnant people." I shake my head, but my chest feels lighter.

He winked, and I was grateful he turned away before he could see me blushing. I put on some of Moira’s music and we got to work. We didn’t talk much, moving in sync. Every now and then we’d bump into each other, exchanging shy glances that felt like sparks. Each time our eyes met, the air seemed to thrum with static, too charged to hold for long. As I bent down to lift the last storage bin onto a shelf, I heard a sharp crash. Spinning around, I saw shattered glass at Tobi’s feet, blood trickling from his clenched fist. His jaw was tight, his eyes now black and flecked with gold were locked on me.
