"Growing fast. She's started combat training." I smiled despite myself. "Reminds me of her mother sometimes." The words slipped out before I could stop them. She looked at him, softened, and stole the last cookie before he could take it. “You are cruel,” Keiran told her. “I am pregnant,” Astrid replied. “Different rules.” Keiran sighed. “Convenient.” Astrid agreed, “Very.” We all laughed. The sound rose into the warm Brooksbridge evening, easy and bright. I looked around at everyone I loved and let the moment settle deep inside me.

Before I can answer a loud popping sound comes from my left with a white puff of smoke. “We head south, toward the airport,” Astrid answers. She is still catching her breath from what must have been a tough battle. She was covered in dirt, her blue eyes looking lighter against the dark dirt. She’s so small, but oh how looks can be deceiving. Between her and Shawn I would rather take on Shawn who could literally order me to kill myself and I would gladly oblige with his mind control. “Did you get what you needed?” I ask her. She holds up the gold heart shaped locket and smiles. Her teeth are about the only thing that isn’t covered in dirt.

We chatted easily, almost as though Astrid wasn’t in a cage dressed like a ballerina and there wasn’t a war back at home with our packs. But then a voice interrupted us.

Swiftly, Azael withdrew from Astrid before any pain could register on her face. Astrid opened her eyes, missing the pleasure she felt until Azael fed from her. "Is that it?" Astrid asked, her face lowering. Azael licked what was left on his lips. He wiped his blood-splattered mouth with the back of his hand. "I hope I didn't tire you out, little mate." Azael asked. "No, you didn't. I didn't even realize when all this ended," Astrid replied, moving her hand to her neck, half-expecting an itch from Azael's feeding. To her surprise, there was no discomfort, not even a trace of the puncture mark.

Before anyone could react Adam leaned in. Attempting to close the distance. To kiss her. A move meant to claim. To provoke. To assert dominance. But Astrid turned her head. Cleanly. Effortlessly.
