I threw it open on the mattress, flipping through the heavy pages as fast as my fingers could move. Eileen ran into the room, panting slightly as she watched me. “Thalia, please talk to me. Is everything okay? What are you looking for?” A second later, the heavy oak door pushed open again, and Ragnar arrived. His face was etched with worry, his large frame filling the doorway. “Thalia, what's wrong? Why did you run off?” I didn't reply to either of them. My eyes were locked onto the binding of the book. Right where the dark magic chapter was supposed to be, a clean, sharp edge showed that a page had been violently torn out.

The heavy feeling on my forehead vanished and a harsh cry immediately echoed in my head. "Take it!" It was Candice's voice no doubt. I didn't know why I cared to listen but I did. I knew what she wanted me to do and my fingers got to work. While Satake hugged me tight, my fingers stumbled an open book by my side and I tore a generous amount of pages off. I then folded it and stuffed it under the duvet. It happened so fast, I wasn't even sure if it was of my will. I had no idea what was in the book, why I felt a magnetic pull towards it and, what I even needed it for. Satake broke the hug and stepped back to regard me.

He really wanted to stop, but now that he had started it, Asher had to see it through. However, when he checked the diary again, the page he turned to was empty, and so were the remaining pages. Huh? “He was—he was choking, like he was going to die!” Lucien calmly walked back to his chair and picked up his whiskey glass. “I believe I told you already, didn’t I?” He took a sip. Hazel’s gaze snapped to the glass in his hand. With just a glare, it shattered into pieces. Lucien sighed, glancing at the fresh cut on his hand. He watched as the wound slowly closed, his blood drying. “Shit. Chill, will you?” He shook his head, wiping his hand on his shirt. “This is the second time you’ve cut me with a damn glass. You’re a psycho.”

Grabbing the book out of my hold, she turned the page back and inspected it closely. A deep frown creased her forehead as she informed me, "Look, someone has torn the pages." Clearing my vision, I looked closely, I could see the leftover pages at the site of binding. Some entries were missing. Something happened after they got married and between my birth. Sophie placed her hand on mine, "I know you have many new questions now. But don’t worry, we’ll find another way to get the answers.” She squeezed gently, "At least, we got the answer we were looking for."

The page he had opened was burnt off. “This is the second book with Odette that has a page missing just when it's about to become about her!” he declared, the tone of his voice increasing in irritation. My heart dropped to my stomach once more as I quickly flipped through the pages of the book in my hands. But just as Cassian had observed, the pages of the book with me were also burnt off at the page that was supposed to be about Odette… “No… No…” I mumbled as I quickly started flipping through the rest of the books.

Serena saw the tightness in his shoulders, the uncertainty in how the tips of his fingers moved across the spines of the books. Serena nodded, but the sentiment felt hollow. She was supposed to help. You were meant to be the one who knew it all. But instead, lost, a marionette skewered on her own strings. As Lucian and Elias began searching, Serena continued deeper into the library. The ink on some of the books were faded, and her fingertips scraped across the cracked pages of the ancient books.
