Pinning me against the wall, he gripped my jaw and growled, “You are mine, Ember.” His hand closed around my throat tightly before he whispered venomously, “Mine to break. Mine to destroy. I heard the trembling voice from my left, "Lemme ask you again, are you really sure about it, Ember?" I jerked my head in Sophie's direction, not liking the doubt in her demeanor at the last minute, "Why else do you think I've crossed the Forbidden Border and entered the North territory?" Her eyes swept our gloomy surroundings, taking in the dark forest all around, and she shivered, "I am not liking any of it. We can still go back..." My eyes narrowed in annoyance, "The fear in your voice is now making me question Liam's training skills." Sophie rolled her eyes, "You are this much confident because you are an Alpha born." I gave her another look to which she responded with a groan, "Don't look at me like that. You know why I am this afraid. I mean, come on, we are in the NORTH." I shook my head and sighed in disappointment, "You knew what you were getting yourself into when you agreed to it, Sophie."Her voice lowered when she replied, "I couldn't really let you come here all alone, Ember."
I squared my shoulders, "I am not afraid of anything or anyone. I could have done it alone if you were so afraid." Her fear was making me feel agitated. Sophie had been training with me since childhood. Both of us have been trained by the best of the warriors but look at her, she was just being a scary cat. But, her fear was justified to some extent too. Yes, none of us had ever stepped into the North region but we've surely heard our fair share of legendary tales of cruel wolves inhabiting the area who were also our worst enemies. I have seen people shiver with fear at the mere mention of the ruthless King of the North. Sophie opened her mouth to say something but immediately clamped it shut as we heard hurried footsteps at some distance. We pressed our backs against the tree trunk and halted our breaths. At that moment, I seriously started regretting my decision to let Sophie tag along with me. We had used my special perfume to mask our scents and had practically stopped breathing to prevent any attention but it was all useless because Sophie's erratic heartbeat could be heard by the enemies if they were to come any closer. My father's voice replayed in my mind, "Bring them back, and only then I'll deem you worthy as my inheritor. Consider it the last test." And just to prove to him that I was, indeed, capable of being the next ruler of the South, I had traveled all the way to the North and now I was this close to my destination. So, no, I would not let defeat take over at any cost now.
I weighed my options and made a quick decision. Taking a risk, I trod closer to Sophie. Without making any sound, I placed my hand over her mouth as tightly as I could because I couldn't really afford her screaming at that crucial moment. I could see her pupils widening under the moonlight. Her eyebrows were creased in confusion and horror. I urged her to look into my eyes and when she did, I grasped her attention. I kept staring deep into her eyes, letting my special hypnotizing abilities win over her senses. Once she submitted to my hypnotizing power, I opened our mind link, and ordered her, "From this moment on, you'll stay calm and silent." A moment after she nodded her head, I saw a mist covering her pupils and her shoulders slouched as she relaxed down. I waited for her heartbeat to drop to the normal rate before stepping away from her. I took in my surroundings and only when I was sure that no enemy was lurking around anymore, I turned back to Sophie and said through our mindlink, "Now, follow me." I loved using my hypnotizing power on my enemies but when it came to friends, I didn't like controlling them like puppets. But in this case, it was necessary for so many reasons. Too much was at stake to not take a risk. After an hour more of walking, we reached the edge of the forest and could see the towers of the Alestai Castle, housing the most powerful pack of the North territory, the Shadow Hunters. The pack, as well as the whole North, was ruled by Alpha Nicholus Dicaprio, commonly known as the Alpha of Darkness. He was well-known for his ruthlessness and cruelty. He was the kind of Alpha about whom mothers told stories to their kids to discipline them, the kind of Alpha when spoken about entailed fear and terror. Even though I had never seen or met him, but still, for some reason, I wasn't afraid of him. Why would I?I was, indeed, the only daughter of the King of the South. Soon, I'll be the Queen of the South. Why exactly would I fear the enemy when I was raised and trained by the most skilled warriors?
As we drew closer, I took in a sharp breath at the marvelous structure of the Alestai Castle. All the stories about it being the epitome of architecture were true then.We kept walking until we reached its back side. To my dismay, the castle was heavily guarded. Even after trying hard, I was unable to get my hands on its map or any inside information but I'd be damned if I would be leaving without two prisoners my father had told me to retrieve.
Tilting my head upward, I pinpointed the highest tree around me. Tightening the cape around me, I started climbing the tree. Less than three minutes later, I was perched on its highest branch from where I could view the back side of the castle. From what I could see, two wolves were pacing the back entrance. They were on high alert and no doubt, thirsty for some blood.Beyond the gates, what I would encounter was a total mystery.
Tonight, my weapon won't be my fighting skills. It would be my hypnotizing power because drawing any attention was the last thing I needed tonight. Climbing down, I informed Sophie through the mindlink, "Stay close to me. As an afterthought, I added, "And just avoid dying at any cost."Ember's POV: Back in my room, I slammed the door shut and started pacing the floor angrily. All of a sudden, Milo started following me around the room. He thought I was actually playing with him. Crouching, I carried him in my arms and turned him around to face me. He stared at me with little twinkling eyes and that was enough to dissipate all of my anger. Rubbing his belly with my fingers, I carried him to bed with me and flopped on the mattress. Wriggling out of my hold, he jumped over the pillow and started playing with my hair. I wanted to play with him some more but after the long and hectic day, keeping eyes open felt like a difficult task. My eyes felt heavy and finally drooped closed while I was still following his movements around the bed. _________ The next morning, I squirmed in my sleep and slowly opened my eyes. Sunlight was peeking in through the curtains. I yawned and stretched out my arms on the mattress when all of a sudden, I yelped and retrieved them. Som
Ember's POV: Mother stayed till evening. We didn't jump right into training sessions. She started by telling me all about my witch ancestry, educating me about me being a hybrid, and explaining how I can acquire powerful skills and expertise in magic while making sure that my wolf remain safe. The point was to achieve a balance between my two sides. She explained that it was the blood of Dark Spirits that ran through my veins. The powers of this particular coven were dark and dangerous. Our element was nature, one of the trickiest to bend and manipulate for our cause. And that's why, she wanted to keep things at a slow pace in the start. She insisted that before I could actually start playing with magic, I first needed to learn how to control the surge of power that I'd experience after letting my witch side take control. We did some breathing exercises and she taught me how to concentrate. Literally, she plucked a leaf from the tree, placed that in front of me, and asked me t
Ember's POV:My insides were rattling like some storm had hit me with full-force. A mixture of hurt and anger zinged through my veins and I didn't know how to control it.Taking my suitcase to the same room I used to live in before marrying the rude, rude Alpha King, I unzipped it and started dumping all its contents inside the closet.Once done, I glanced at the clock and gasped loudly. It was already 10 am. Mother would be here any time now. During our last meeting, it was decided that she'd come here three days in a week to train me as a witch.Grabbing my tracksuit from the almirah, I quickly changed my clothes, gathered my hair in a tight ponytail, and rushed down the stairs. On my way outside the castle, I was interrupted by a worried voice, "Ember, where are you going?"I halted in my tracks and whipped around to find Luna frowing at me. Walking closer to her, I stated, "I told you about my training sessions with mother, right?"Understanding settled in her eyes and she nodded
Ember's POV: What did he think of himself? Did he have any idea about what was he even doing? What point was he trying to make here? Yes, I do accept my mistake. I said the only thing I shouldn't have said. But I too regretted that instantly, didn't I? I even tried to talk to him and clear things up more than once but he wasn't even ready to listen to me. Jogging into the closet room, I looked at the suitcases placed in the top cabinets. I scanned the room for a stool and spotted one in the corner. Rushing there, I started dragging that toward the almirah when the door flung open and a very angry-looking Alpha King burst inside, "What are you doing?" he asked with rage. Ignoring him and his presence, I kept pushing the stool until it was where I wanted it to be. Nicholus walked closer, "I'm talking to you." "And talking to YOU is the last thing I want right now," I spat menacingly before stepping on the stool. It had a cushioned surface and I stumbled while planting my feet. N
Ember's POV: My mind awoke and my body immediately went into a fighting mode as I felt something poking my chest. My eyes snapped open and I groaned heavily to find I wasn't in any danger. It was only my little, curious friend who was mounting on my neck and sniffing me.My body relaxed. Lifting my hand, I rubbed my face and thought it would take some time for both of us to get used to each other. But then, there would be mornings when I wouldn't wake up dreadfully because I'd already know it was Milo. My arm instinctively moved to the other side of the mattress and just like the last few days, it was cold and empty. My heart ached to feel his warmth and morning cuddles. I simply missed his presence. I missed our mornings together. I missed the way he used to snuggle me closer and shower me with kisses.I had no idea how things escalated so fast. I wanted to know what was going on in his mind. Why was he so angry that he wasn't even ready to give me a chance to explain myself? Why
Nicholus's POV:At the dinner table, I was cutting through the steak in front of me when Damon chirped, "Wait, what's all that?"I lifted my head to find him looking at the door with curiosity.A moment later, three maids started entering the dining hall with their hands full of packages and boxes. One of them stepped forward and answered him, "These are for the Queen."Ember's eyes shone as she smiled widely, "What? They're already here?"The maid bowed her head, "All the orders placed from the castle are of top priority and are usually delivered in a day."Luna swallowed her bite and looked at Ember, "Even though your excitement is making me curious to know what's in there, don't worry, I won't ask," she winked.Ember rushed out hurriedly, "Oh, I'd ordered all these items for Milo. I'd very much like to show it to you later on, Luna.""Is that...is that a catio?" Damon pointed at a big box.Ember chuckled sheepishly, "Yes. I'm planning to place it in my balcony so that Milo can enjo
