The glass was reinforced, designed to withstand a tank shell, but it wasn't designed for a man who had nothing left to lose. I saw her. She was standing in the center of the room, looking like a broken angel in that thin white gown. She looked so small, so fragile, but when our eyes met through the glass, I saw it—the fire. The green was back, burning with a fierce, defiant light. I fired three rounds into the corner of the glass, the structural integrity shattering into a spiderweb of cracks. I slammed my shoulder into it, the glass exploding outward in a thousand glittering shards.

His heartbeat pulsed in his ears, every second stretching longer than it should. He leaned in, breath fogging the glass slightly. And there barely visible beneath the silvering of the mirror something glimmered. A small, circular distortion, right over his shoulder. It wasn’t dirt. It wasn’t a crack. It was a lens. Noa’s gasp filled the silence. “There’s another one” Before he could finish, Alessio’s fist went straight through the glass. The mirror shattered instantly, a loud, violent sound that sliced through the stillness. Shards rained to the floor like glittering rain, sharp edges catching the dim light.

She dropped the glass that contained one of the councilmen’ spit along with the cleaning products. We all take a moment to watch as her body folds over itself while she shrinks to her short statue, her once blond hair now fading to gray, her skin gaining a warmth that was lacking in Donovan and instead being replaced by her deep wrinkles. “Go!” I hear her shout and instantly I know this message is for me. “Seize them!” I think Delfino calls out, but my back is already turned and I race through the doors. I have to at least get outside before I transform so I can safely set down the only glass we have left.

His eyes never left hers and neither did her eyes leave his.
