“If Jack actually wants Tamara gone, then why doesn’t he just be upfront about it with the elders? If they’re likely to support him, why hide?”
Her question had a bitter edge, and as I mulled it over, anger built up in me. “Because Jack doesn’t just want me gone,” I explained, trying to keep the venom out of my voice. “He wants Dante gone, too. He’s aiming for more than just turning the elders against me—he’s aiming for the north. If he comes out openly, yes, he’d probably get their support. But then he’d have to fight Dante directly, and we all know he’d lose that fight.” I took a deep breath. “Jack’s hiding his intentions because he’s waiting. He wants to gather as much support as he can,
