“I’d think you’d be begging for more.” When he threw his head back while laughing at his own sick humor, Edwin seized the moment and twisted from beneath him. Before the vampire could grasp what was happening, he grabbed his head with both hands and pulled with all his might. “Let’s see what we have here.” Waylen flipped through the numerous movies on his TV. I stifled a laugh when he stopped at one. The thumbnail showed a wolf beside a girl and two other guys. I had seen three of them from memes and GIFs. “How about this?” “Twilight?” I asked. “Yeah.” My brows wrinkled. I hadn’t seen the movie, but all the spoilers and snippets on social media made me feel like I had watched it and read the book. “Okay,” I answered, mainly because of his unusual interest in werewolves. He had done so much for me tonight; this was the little I could do to even the balance. He hit play, and I murmured, “Twilight it is, Ezra.”

Except for that one, last vampire. Standing before the door, blocking her path, was a large, well sculpted vampire, completely draped in black. He looked younger than the others, maybe 20, and his features were more chiseled. Even in her haste, even with her life in such danger, Caitlin could not help but noticing how strikingly attractive this vampire was. Still, he was blocking her only way out. She could outrun the others, but she could not get past this man without going right through him. He opened the door even wider, as if making way for her to pass through it. Was he tricking her? She looked down and saw that he held a long spear in his hand.

She reached into her pocket, extracted the rolled up scroll, and carefully lined up the other half of the torn page. It was a perfect match. They all crowded in closer. As the pages came together as one, Caitlin could not believe what she saw. Each page showed one half of an ancient shield, sun rays coming off of it, shining. As she lined the pages up together, Caitlin realized it could be none other than a picture of the ancient vampire shield. All around the picture were Latin words. As the pages lined up, the sentences were now complete. Words, previously torn in half, now fit together, letters matching each other perfectly.

Her breath came fast and shallow, every heartbeat a drumbeat of panic. Then— her fingers brushed over a faint indentation in the wall. Hope surged, fierce and wild. Claire pressed harder, and with a soft, reluctant click, a small panel shifted open, revealing a narrow, pitch-black crawlspace barely wide enough for her shoulders. Her heart leaped and twisted in her chest. It was a risk— but staying here was death. Without a second thought, Claire shoved the journal into the waistband of her pants, dropped to her knees, and crawled into the darkness.
