The everyday grocery store was at least thrice as big when there were still other countries. As Twilight went deeper and deeper into the store, a common enemy emerged. “Oh.” Twilight quickly hides behind one of the aisles as he opens his log. Turning to a page he’s turned to multiple times before, Twilight reads the creature’s name. Husk. The husk was one of the creatures that the voice created. While the hunters were a direct manifestation of the voice and the conduits were its avatars, the husks are a side effect of the voice’s power.

“You either learn from it, or you let it drown you. So maybe just… try not being a dickhead again.” I barked a short laugh. “Is that your great wisdom for tonight?” “Take it or leave it.” A flash of light pulsed at the edge of the corridor—soft, sudden, and unmistakably magical. The Northern Lights. Lira turned her face toward the glow. The light caught the golden undertones in her caramel skin, painting her in starlight and shadows. She looked like a warrior born from the dusk. Her grip on my hand tightened slightly. “Let’s go.”

I stared into their soulless faces. “Take them,” Lilith said. “Let them off their chains.” “And what is their command?” I asked, though I already knew.

Relief flooded her, but almost immediately, the fiery heat in her body surged, overwhelming her. She slid down against the wall, her strength giving out, and pulled off her T-shirt in an attempt to cool down. Her breathing was heavy, and her pounding heartbeat echoed in her ears. Her entire body felt as though it were being devoured by ants, the sensation unbearable. She couldn’t stop the soft, stifled moans that escaped her lips. Suddenly, a sharp click pierced the air, and the lights flicked on. Tara’s vision blurred, her consciousness slipping away. Through her hazy gaze, she saw a tall, striking man walking toward her.

Lyall growled harshly. “Easy… I didn’t come here to fight or cause trouble,” the witch said. Lyall looked at him with a searching gaze. His hair was long past his shoulders, her clothes resembled a long black dress, and she wore a black cloak as well. But the witch was a man. A hybrid wolf approached and growled at him. Lyall turned and growled too. Lyall turned to the witch and growled, demanding that he leave. Lyall attacked the hybrid wolf. The hybrid wolves weren’t as strong as the Rogues. They were strong as vampires but not as wolves, so Lyall was able to defeat them easily.

Then she tugged at my hand and moved me down the hallway, looking around like she wanted to be sure nobody was close enough to hear what she was about to say to me. “Do you know what this means? It's nothing like we've seen before” her strange black eyes were piercing mine. Camile was not a werewolf or Lycan, she was a witch. Her coven had her banished for falling in love with a Lycan. Camille chose love and love brought her here. “I noticed” Of course, her nightmares were nothing like any I had seen before, it was crystal clear. “You don't get it Reuben” her voice was firm causing my gaze that was somewhere else to jerk back to her face.

It grew colder and heavier, and an unnatural stillness settled over the clearing. “Something’s wrong,” Ewen said, his body tensing. “We’re not alone.” A low growl rumbled through the air, and my blood turned to ice. Shadows began to move, slithering along the ground like living entities. From the darkness emerged creatures, unlike anything I’d ever seen. Their eyes glowed a sickly green, and their twisted forms radiated malevolence. “What are those?” I whispered, my voice barely audible. Lucian stepped in front of me, his body radiating a protective energy. “Wraiths. Servants of the dark force tied to the prophecy.”

I opened my mouth, but nothing came out. The truth was right there, but fear tightened around my throat and swallowed it whole. And Damien… He hadn’t looked away once. His eyes were locked on me, sharp and unreadable. It felt like he could see through me. I was having a panic attack and I couldn't move. I wished I could disappear. After what felt like forever, I gave the smallest nod. It was all I could manage. The priest raised his arms high. “Then, by the ancient laws of the Lycan bloodline, I now pronounce you mates. May the Moon Goddess bless your union.”

“Lucian has begun his march. His army has tripled since last we counted.” Darius’s eyes darkened. “Tripled?” “The warlocks have been busy,” she said. “They’ve been performing rituals binding the fallen wolves, twisting their spirits back into flesh. What he commands now… they’re not living. They’re something else.” Lyra’s heart sank. “The Shadowborn.” Helene nodded. “Creatures that don’t bleed or tire. They feed on pain and obey no alpha but him.” A chill rippled through the air, and for a moment, even the wind seemed to die.
