Sparkle stared at the painting, unable to tear her eyes from it. He’d painted this room, with the giant, lit-up tree, with stacks of presents at its feet, and the hint of fairy lights from the tiny houses in the woods shining through the glass behind it.
On the floor, he’d painted Hayzel, the puppy climbing all over her as the little girl laughed. He’d painted him and Sparkle, arms around each other, watching the magic unfold together.
