“Then why serve it?” Serenya demanded.
“Because,” Maelis said, her voice low, dangerous, “I intend to rule it.”
The air thickened. Shadows coiled around her feet, rising like smoke. Her gown fluttered though there was no wind. “Do not fight me, Serenya. When the moon rises, Eryndor will spill the first blood. Your choice will decide whose.”
The sigil blazed brighter, heat burning through the cuff. Serenya gritted her teeth, forcing herself upright. “I won’t be your weapon.”
