They collapsed on the deck, shivering violently, the silver vial still clenched in Elena’s frozen fist.
Behind them, with a final, groaning sigh, the SS Calliope vanished beneath the ink-black river, leaving only bubbles and spreading rainbow oil.
On the shore, the city was coming back to life. The strange silence was replaced by the beautiful, chaotic noise of confusion people crying, shouting, asking what happened. The nightmare was lifting with the dawn.
Exhausted, they sat on the riverbank, watching the sun paint the sky in pinks and golds. The hum in their bones was gone. The secret pressure in their minds the Shhh was just a memory.
