Three nights later the station was running on reduced power again. A sensor array on the outer ice had failed and most of the crew were occupied with diagnostics in the main lab. Elias sent Maya a single message on the internal system: Dome. Now. She went. The observation dome was colder than last time. The aurora was weaker, just a faint green haze against the black sky. Elias was waiting with his outer layers already off. The look on his face was darker, hungrier. When the door sealed behind her he didn’t kiss her first. He turned her around, pressed her against the curved glass, and pulled her thermal pants down in one rough motion.

Penny allowed her anger to feed her strength. A high pitch screech greeted them as they drew closer to the entry point of the dome. On the flatter base of the Mountain, the spot was accessible by an unpaved road. Once it was in view, they saw the four beasts that were pounding against the shield. Flipped over on its roof some meters away was a minivan. There was no one inside. Shadows rained down from above, also banging against the shield of the dome. Even though the enemy didn’t make a dent, they kept going.
