CHAPTER 3 He led me across the lawn towards a large oak tree. My toes sunk into the soft loam of the yard, feeling the lush grass caressing my toes as I walked naked towards the tree. The boughs of the aged giant swayed across the sky as though trying to sweep the clouds away so that it could be reunited with the sun once again. “Hug the tree, slut. Your body needs to be tightly pressed against it, and your legs need to be spread.”

Then a voice — different from before — echoed, clear and mournful: “The past hides the key. Seek the chamber beneath the old oak.” “Did you hear that?” Seth asked, eyes wide. I nodded, heart pounding. “The chamber beneath the old oak…” Memories flickered—snatches of an ancient tree deep in the estate’s garden, its gnarled branches twisting against the night sky. “Then that’s where we go,” Travis said decisively. But as we turned to leave, a sudden sharp crack echoed through the room. The door slammed open, revealing a figure draped in shadow, eyes glowing with unnatural light.

Maya’s POV: I look at the huge oak tree in front of us and forget how to breathe for a moment. It is taller than the rest. Its trunk is wide and old, with deep lines running along the bark. The branches stretch high, almost touching the moon. Lyra walks closer and places her palm on the tree like she knows it. “This is the oldest tree in this part of the forest,” she says softly. I step beside her. “How do you know?”

"Okay. Bye, Zoey! " "Bye, Herbie." Zoey and I continued on our way to the guardrail guarded by the same old man before. Zoey told him something, and the old man let us through. As before, he wrote something down in his book. Zoey was still holding my arm when we got under the fig tree. At night, this tree looks frightening by many dangling roots. However, I could feel an aura of warmth radiating from this tree. When I decided to stop, Zoey turned her head.

The oak tree, a silent witness to the tragedy, seemed to bow in mourning, its branches rustling like whispered condolences. Those are black oak leaves and acorns.” “Okay.” Amber looked up at the tree.

" “What did the letter say again about the destination my Luna? “ I took out the letter from my pocket and read it out loud. "We will find an unusual oak tree. It has three branches only and its roots run through the forest. The tree is what we will see before we see an old pathway that leads to the village gates. My son will be waiting for you at the entrance to lead you on so that the citizens will not attack you as a strange face.” Dion chuckled. "The map is indeed easy it decipher, everything,” he said sarcastically and I could not help but laugh too. "I think we should trace any root that seems to extend very far. Since the letter says the tree's roots extend through the forest.”

They needed to keep moving, to find ways to get out of the area. Anna guided Luna through the forested area until they reached a tiny clearing. Their movements were muted by a thick layer of fallen leaves beneath their feet. Luna couldn't ignore the feeling that they were being watched, but she knew Anna would keep them safe. A large, gnarled oak stood in the center of the clearing, shimmering in the moonlight. Anna approached the tree and spoke inaudibly beneath her breath. The trunk of the tree suddenly broke open, revealing a hidden corridor.

Not after everything we had been through. The darkness outside hit me like a punch to the gut. It meant we had been tortured for most of the day. The moon was small, barely casting any light. It was the end of another lunar month, and that didn’t make things easier. Normally, Xavier and I could move through the night like it was nothing—our night vision sharp, our bodies built for it. But tonight, we were barely keeping our eyes open. We stumbled and partially dragged each other toward the backyard. And there it was. The oak tree. The very one that had brought us here. We collapsed against its thick, ancient trunk, both of us breathing heavily.

Ever since I have learnt to morph and fly I have never passed the way through the forest, choosing to fly over it, but still I should have seen a tree this big from above, or so I thought. I strangely felt like other trees were wary of the oak, as they grew very so far apart from it, leaving a hundreds of feet of wide patch of grass around it.
