Charlotte’s POV Five Years Later… Five years, apparently, could change a lot about a burned forest. There was still a long way to go, of course. The oak we’d planted at Elena’s grave barely came up to Nora’s hip, which Ellie had informed us this morning was technically called a sapling and not a tree, and Nora had promptly informed her little sister that she was being a know-it-all, to which Ellie stuck out her tongue. But the rest of it had come back. Slowly, stubbornly, and at their own pace. The undergrowth had returned first, then the smaller trees, then the birds, and this spring the canopy had finally been thick enough in a few places to cast some shade, although not much.

The roar of the aquatic center was still echoing in Naomi’s chest long after Maya had climbed out of the pool. The junior squad was practically vibrating with the high of the upset, wrapping Maya in damp towels and screaming until their voices gave out. Naomi stood at the edge of the huddle, letting them have their moment. She looked down at her right hand. The slight tremor was there, brought on by the adrenaline and the humid heat of the pool deck, but for the first time in five years, she didn't feel the urge to hide it in her pocket.

Amelia's POV As I made my way through the forest, the familiar sight of the towering oak tree greeted me like an old friend. Its gnarled branches reached out to me, casting dappled shadows upon the forest floor as if beckoning me closer. With each step, the soft crunch of leaves beneath my feet echoed through the tranquil air, a comforting melody that soothed my restless soul. The canopy above filtered the sunlight into a dappled mosaic of light and shadow, casting a sense of enchantment over the secluded grove where the ancient oak stood sentinel.

“Glee . . . shit.” Another tremor jolted them, and the centuries-old cottonwood tree—the only thing left out there—twisted and leaned, losing its foothold on the remainder of the crumbling bank. The old oak tree still stands at the center, its branches spreading like gnarled fingers against the sky. Dante pulls a shovel from his truck bed. "Thomas said the north side of the tree, three feet down." They walk to the oak in silence. Sera's heart pounds as Dante starts to dig. Every shovelful of earth feels like they're excavating their own graves. "There." Dante drops to his knees, brushing dirt away from something metallic. A small lockbox, rusted but intact. He pulls it free and sets it on the ground between them. The lock is simple—Dante breaks it with one sharp twist.

Colton looks like he wants to walk into a tree. I shake my head, unable to stop the small smile tugging at my lips. “You two are terrible at lying.” Oakley beams. “Thank you.” “That wasn’t a compliment,” I say. “It felt like one,” he replies. Colton exhales slowly. “Let’s just… move on. The orchard is this way.” Oakley nods quickly. “Yes. Orchard. Trees. Fruit. No mysterious healer prophecies there.” Colton mutters, “Hopefully.”

A bee buzzes somewhere while a breeze ruffles the nearby giant oak tree leaves. With a clutch of fear in my heart, I feel light-headed as if I might be sick.
