I should have been used to this by now—he had been bitter and nasty ever since the day he’d found the contraceptive—but it still hurt. It wasn’t like it was my fault that I had to do this. I was doing my best, wasn’t I? I reached out inwardly to my wolf, muttering, “Men,” hoping for a chuckle or a sarcastic response. But all I got from Onyx was a yawn. Sighing, I decided to take a moment to myself. I spotted a large oak tree at the edge of the meadow, a tree that the twins and I often picnicked under during the summers, and made my way toward it.

"Oh my God, you’re awake! Doctor! Doctor!" “Mom?” I whispered, my voice barely audible. “I’m coming, sweetheart, just hold on.” she replied. “Mom.” I wanted to apologize for the trouble I had caused her, but thankfully, she returned to my bedside. “Why would you do something like this?” she asked, tears streaming down her cheeks as she grasped my hand tightly. I recounted everything that had happened since I enrolled at Oak Mountain School, including the torment I endured from Charlotte, Reuben and Jerry, my ex-boyfriend.

“Come on. I’ll take you upstairs to rest.” He stood and guided her toward the stairs. Finn and Calvin exchanged a look. Then they followed right after them. God, I wanted to go eavesdrop so badly. Linda, sitting beside me, muttered under her breath, “Slutty bitch.” That jogged my memory. There was a drugging subplot around this part of the story. If I remembered correctly, Linda was the culprit. She had been secretly in love with Calvin for years, but Calvin only had eyes for Nancy. In the original novel, she managed to drug him, but afterward he turned the tables and dosed her ten times worse, leaving her stranded with no help. She ended up with a terrible fate.

It began with a cryptic message delivered to our doorstep, a message that hinted at a hidden truth yet to be discovered. "Amelia, Ethan," the letter read, "there is more to your story than you realize. Seek the forgotten sanctuary beneath the old oak tree at midnight, and you shall find the key to unlocking the next chapter." Intrigued and filled with a sense of trepidation, we followed the instructions and arrived at the designated spot under the cover of darkness. The moon's gentle glow filtered through the branches, casting an ethereal light on the ground below. As we approached the ancient oak tree, a soft breeze whispered secrets through its leaves, beckoning us forward.

Perhaps, her helper was still waiting for her at the oak tree. After minutes of a non-stop run, Sophia finally got to the oak tree. But unfortunately, there was no one there. Probably, the helper had waited for and decided to go. She breathed heavily, squatting to catch some breath. The area was purely deserted. Except for the whispers of the night, there was no other trace of life. She walked to the oak tree and scanned it thoroughly for a slightest trace of a message left for her. But there was nothing. No piece of cloth. No paper. In the midst of her frustration, she heard a sound.

“Becca…” “I wasn’t trying to trick you,” I said quickly. “I know how it sounds. I know it was reckless and illegal and everything you’d never expect from me. But gods, Rhys—I was so tired. Of waiting.” Rhys didn’t say anything. His hand tightened at my waist, but not roughly. I swallowed the knot rising in my throat. “You remember the oak tree behind the old armory? The one the palace gardeners always complained about?” Rhys huffed a breath, a sound almost like a laugh. “You mean the one you fell out of trying to steal Queen Omara’s lemon tarts?”

June arrived with heat and humidity. The kind of weather that made you want to sit still and do nothing. Catherine said the garden loved it. Doris said the garden was welcome to it. Maple dug a hole under the porch and refused to come out. Marmalade sat on the porch railing and watched the world with lazy eyes. I sat on the swing. The oak tree gave shade. A breeze moved through the leaves. I had my laptop open. The novel was published. The Secret Billionaire I Married. My name on the cover. My story inside.

she began, her voice soft as she closed her eyes briefly, taking a deep breath. “We’ve gone over the book hoping for a clue about the oak tree, but there wasn’t anything,” I explained, my frustration evident in my tone. “That’s because we hid it, because we couldn’t trust the Werewolves,” Naomi said, her eyes narrowing as she shot a glare at Bas. “The Werewolves always believed they were immortal, the greatest and most powerful creatures on Earth. But one day, the witches found the oak tree—a loophole given by the universe. When the Werewolves found out, they saw us as a threat, killing every witch they knew and destroying all the oak trees. But there was one. So my ancestors created this bo

“He hasn’t released me.” “He will.” The certainty in her tone leaves no room for doubt. “What if he never does?” Her head tilts slightly. “He will.” Silence hums between us. “Where?...Where can i find you?” I ask. The clearing shifts. The trees blur and rearrange. The vision expands outward like a map unfurling. I see forest stretching westward denser, darker. A narrow trail barely visible beneath overgrowth. A river cutting through stone. Then a massive oak tree. Its trunk is split clean down the center, blackened along the jagged seam as if lightning once struck it from sky to root. The top half leans precariously but still lives, branches heavy with leaves.

Cat's last email replayed over and over in my mind like a sinister song, highlighting the shadows in Lachlan's past that seemed to loom over me. Then, I saw it: a grand oak tree, its gnarled branches stretching skyward, beckoning me closer. I didn't understand what it was doing here on a desert island. And more than that, how did Cat tell me to meet her at an oak tree just yesterday and here was an oak tree. What the fuck was this?
