KARIN The ancient oak tree at the center of the Nightfall Pack grounds had stood for more than three hundred years. Its thick trunk was wide and uneven, carved by lightning, claws, and long-forgotten battles. I pressed my palm against the rough bark. It scratched my skin, solid and real. Beneath it, I felt the slow, steady movement of life. This tree had watched leaders rise, rule, and fall. It had seen loyalty turn into betrayal. It had seen hope fail and return again.

Tears brimmed in her eyes and slowly spilled down her cheeks. Riftan was seated in the meadow beside his house, and he wasn't alone. There was a beautiful redhead woman straddling him, hands wrapped around his neck, head thrown back in laughter. Riftan had his arms around the woman's waist and was teasing her with his lips, making her giggle. Annabelle watched them while her heart shattered into a million pieces. Oblivious of Annabelle's presence, Riftan held the woman close while he breathed in her scent, enjoying the sparks that danced over his body as they made contact. Suddenly the sweet scent of lilac assailed him and his eyes snapped open as he heard her whisper.

Sometimes, he's ruthless and cold. Sometimes, he would annoy you with his cockiness. Sometimes, he would act like a stubborn child. And then there are also times when he becomes like this.

The Rift and the sky split again and from far, far away, I heard howls. Real howls from outside. Finnick, kade. They were still waiting. They still believed I would come back. I fell to my knees, glowing, panting, broken but not defeated. A river cutting through stone. Then a massive oak tree. Its trunk is split clean down the center, blackened along the jagged seam as if lightning once struck it from sky to root. The top half leans precariously but still lives, branches heavy with leaves.
