For one disoriented moment she forgot where she was. Then cold earth pressed against her back and reality came crashing down again. Nova immediately checked her surroundings from beneath the tangled roots of the fallen tree. Morning light filtered weakly through thick fog and towering branches overhead Nova slowly pushed herself upright with a groan. Every muscle in her body ached. Dirt and moss clung to her arms and hair while dried mud coated her boots. She probably looked insane. Carefully, Nova crawled out from beneath the fallen tree and stood slowly. Nova checked her surroundings carefully before finally starting to walk.

This time, the force was even stronger and she didn't even have time to react. She couldn't help but let out a small cry of fear.

Her chest heaved as she staggered back, her mind screaming for her to move, to do something. “HELP!” Her voice cracked, hoarse from the smoke. She coughed violently, her eyes burning as she stumbled through the haze. “SOMEBODY—PLEASE!” The fire roared in response, swallowing her cries. The shelves groaned as the wood burned, embers raining down like dying stars. She turned, desperate, searching for another way out. The windows—maybe she could break them, maybe— A sharp crack split the air. The ceiling. It was collapsing.

My feet dangled several feet above the ground. “Shit,” I cursed under my breath, panic clawing at my chest. Going back wasn’t an option. Closing my eyes, I took a deep breath and let go. The fall was quick but brutal. I landed hard, my ankle twisting with a sickening crunch. Pain shot through me, and I clamped a hand over my mouth to stifle a scream. The momentum of my fall pulled her down with me. Time seemed to slow down as gravity took hold. I instinctively twisted my body, curling inward to shield my stomach from the impact of my fall. Pain exploded across my back as I collided with the railing before tumbling further down the stairs. Each collision sent shock waves through my already battered body. Finally, I landed awkwardly on the landing, my breath knocked out of me in one painful gasp.
