Chapter Three ~HAUNTING DANGEROUS GAMES >Kate’s Pov It was two hours after the wedding reception and we were finally home. I stood beside Pierre and watched as the doors to the elevator of his penthouse open. A wave of Pierre's cologne hit me as we stepped in. He smelled of coconut and Lemon -cocolemon. The unique scent did something to my body system, causing my heart to flutter against my ribs. He leaned against the elevator and closed his eyes. I eyed him with lustful eyes, my fingers itching to reach for him but I fisted them instead.

Everything was proceeding as planned—the host was on stage, guests were seated, yet my mind was elsewhere. I hadn't seen Jessica. My heart pounded unnaturally fast, a creeping sense of dread washing over me. Then, the host suddenly said, "Let's hear what the groom has to say." That snapped me back to attention. It wasn't part of the plan. Before I could react, the venue's surround sound speakers blasted to life. A familiar voice echoed through the hall. "I only pursued Jessica to provoke Hugh." "Once I had her, she just felt boring." "But I still couldn't accept it. So, wouldn't it be fun to ditch her at the altar and humiliate her?"

Come make her some soup. But inside, there was only silence. Hugo hesitated. He pressed his ear to the door, thinking she was ignoring him out of spite. So, he softened his voice. "Katherine, don't be stubborn, alright?" Still, there was no response. A trace of unease crept into his heart. He turned the doorknob—only to find it unlocked. After pushing the door open, he froze. The room was spotless, as if no one had ever lived there.

I laughed, shaking my head. “So you say, but I don’t trust your ex anymore than I trust your vapid stepsister,” he shrugged, Adam nodding his agreement. “Always prepared, aren’t you?” I winked, turning to Adam as the elevator stopped on his floor. “I want to throw a housewarming, something small and relaxed. Will you come?” “Just tell me when and what to bring and I’ll be there,” he nodded, the elevator doors closing on him as we went up to my floor.

The lake house had claimed its latest victims quickly. The new owners, the Harringtons, barely unpacked before the walls began their familiar games. But my focus had shifted. The house allowed me longer, more painful glimpses now, as if it wanted me to witness the full rot I had helped plant.
