Valen gave a slow smile, one of satisfaction that never quite reached his eyes. “Anita,” he murmured, watching her as she walked away, his gaze fixed on the sway of her hips. He returned his focus to the puppy in his lap. The little dog nuzzled closer into his side, warm and calm. The music shifted. A new song played through the speakers—Gangsta Love Letter by Llona. Valen tilted his head as the melody filled the air, and he began to sing softly with the first verse. The puppy raised its head and looked up at him, ears twitching with curiosity.

His eyes were ink-dark, and there was a scar running from the side of his lip to his jaw. I turned my head to the next. Older. Wiser, maybe, cold. And then I looked forward again.
