Sinful Affairs
Heavy drapes blocked the windows, candles provided the only light, and the long table was covered with open books, loose papers, and what looked disturbingly like medical journals from the nineteenth century.
She looked up as we entered, and I noticed for the first time that she seemed more alive than either David or me; energized, almost luminous in the candlelight.
“Good. You’re both here.” She gestured to the chairs across from her. “Sit. We need to talk.”
“We need a hospital,” David said. “This is some kind of poisoning, or a parasite…”
“It’s vampirism,” Elena said flatly. “Sit down.”
The word hung in the air like a curse. I sat. After a moment, David did too.
