Her throat tightened, but she held his gaze. “Then they should’ve done a better job the first time.”
He looked at her for a long moment, then smiled sadly. “You sound just like him.”
And before she could respond, a voice broke through the night.
“Wow, is this an intervention or a creepy ex thing?”

He stepped out of the shadows like he’d been there the whole time, hands shoved in his pockets, jacket half-zipped, that infuriating smirk plastered across his face.
