he shouted, not sure who he was asking. The middle child closed his eyes. “She made a promise,” he said. “Not to the Dark. To the house.” --- Memory bled into the room. They saw their mother kneeling, long before her death, fingers digging into the earth beneath the floor. They saw her burying something wrapped in cloth — something that moved. They heard her voice cracking as she swore protection, shelter, inheritance. Take me instead, Lerato had pleaded. Leave them. The promise had been accepted. But not completed.

Drake immediately stands up, out of his attack stance. “Guardian Angel.” “You must be King Drake Cazien. It’s a pleasure to meet you,” my mother says. I step around my mate and see that my mother has extended her hand to Drake. My mother is a small woman, having been held by vampires during her teenage years which stunted her growth. It never impacted her strength, but now watching her, she’s looking up at Drake who is easily a foot and a half taller than she is. Many people underestimate my mother because of her small size. It's a mistake.

"Don't you dare insult my mother!" Anyone who laid a hand on me would earn the wrath of my father. As for me, anyone who insulted my late mother—who died to protect me—would earn my wrath. That was how I went into a sudden rage and managed to struggle out of the bodyguard's grip. My hands reached out to grab Brenda's neck. However, a bat hit me at the back of my head. I went into a daze because of the intense pain from the concussion and fell to the ground.

After thinking for a moment, Thea said, "No one offers excessive flattery without ulterior motives. So, tell me, what do you want to ask from me again?" Victoria's mother pushed the wheelchair onto the narrow path between the vegetable garden. "Why do you have to mock me, Mom? At this age, Mom won't live much longer. My only wish now is to dissolve the hatred between you and your sisters before I die. After Mom is gone, you and your sisters should support each other and depend on each other." "Who would want to depend on her for their life?" Thea found it amusing, "I will only depend on my dear Theodore."

“My parents said that Vessa was doing it as a form of physical therapy. I believed them.” Mom sighed, “They treated you like a mushroom, Iva. They kept you in the dark and fed you crap. Once you all return from the trip, I will also help you.” “Yeah, mom’s the best. She used to be the only female lead warrior across any of the regions before she met Dad.” I said proudly. “Gee, thanks.” I heard my dad grumble, and Mom chuckled. “My king, you are the very best. You know that.” Mom said, smiling, and took his hand.

“I found her.” Amara’s breath caught. “Her?” He nodded. “The one running The Veil’s new syndicate. She’s been using the church catacombs as her base.” “Who is she?” Luca demanded. Mateo’s silence was answer enough. He looked at Amara when he said it. “Your mother.” The world tilted. For a heartbeat, Amara thought she’d misheard him. Then she saw the pity in Mateo’s eyes — and the rage in Luca’s.

I hear gasps and soft sobs as my chest feels heavy knowing it is my mother. "You did it Kulta, you saved him," I hear my father cry; I force my eyes open while sitting up taking a deep sharp breath. “Mutsi, Isä.” My heart stammers when I look over to see my mother lying limp in my father’s arms as her best friend holds them, trying to comfort him. I shake my head thinking losing Mutsi always seemed impossible. My mother was the Moon Goddess; nothing was supposed to be able to kill her. She has always been the one to protect us all.

Victoria's POV I shoot up from the bed as the smile on my face turns sour. "Mom!? What happened!? Why are you crying!?" I ask, dreading her reply deep down within me. My mother is a warrior. Our pack's Zeta. A rank equivalent to a General in the human military. This is the second time I'm hearing her cry in all my nineteen years on earth. The first time was done in the privacy of her room when she lost three of her warriors in a rogue attack.
