"A rat that speaks." I snapped my wrist. The blade came out of my sleeve. My fingers caught it the way they caught everything now... without thinking, without deciding, just knowing. In one fast downward move I drove it into the table. The tip punched through the glass dish. Glass and ash flew across the felt. Syris's chair scraped back hard. The guards moved forward. Left my hand on the grip and didn't move. "Sanguis imperat," I said. The Tokyo woman went rigid.

“Mikela” “Double take. Everything above base is yours.” She didn’t soften it or dress it up. Just the number and the look. I didn’t have five minutes to think about it. That was the point. The letter. Eleven days. Kofi coming home with injuries he wouldn’t explain. I need this. “Fine.” She was already walking away. I stood outside VIP room three and put Zara away. That was my rule here. Zara stayed outside. Pinky, the name I wore inside Velvet like a second skin, was the only one who walked through that door.

But if I left home just as pathetically as I'd lived there, I would be unworthy of the "jinx" nickname I'd been called for years.

"Meet Valencia." Jax spun the chair around, his eyes hidden behind blue-light-filtering glasses scanning me with the bored indifference of a man looking at a software update he didn't want to install. "The damsel?" Jax snorted, popping the Cheeto into his mouth. "She looks like she’d break if I sent her a mean emoji. Why is she in my sanctum? Does she know how to use a mouse, or am I going to have to explain that the ‘any’ key doesn't actually exist?"
