That kind of undone, expensive-looking, villain-at-the-ball aesthetic. His boots were spotless. His hair was perfect. And here I was, wearing the world’s saddest excuse for a dress. It had been lavender once. Real moon-silk. Now?

The chocolate was the first marking so the costume would be the public shaming. “They brought something appropriate,” Veronica said, as if she were describing a new dress for a doll. The demons were mostly wearing black with thick robes. When I entered the pavilion, everyone's eyes were automatically on me and I felt naked in front of their scrutinizing eyes. "What is a servant doing here wearing a noble's clothes?"
